The holidays are behind us, though hopefully, we’re still holding onto some of that holiday magic, even if it was shared over a Zoom call! One thing we don’t want to hold onto this year is pests. Put pest control at the top of your new year’s resolutions this year and let us help you make it a pest-free 2021! Here are three quick ways you can get started!
- Clean Up! Keeping your home clean is the first step against pest prevention. Sweep and vacuum often and mop up spills and crumbs as they happen, especially if they’re in hard to reach areas. Take out the garbage frequently and clean out your toaster, your microwave and behind coffee machines, because you’d be surprised how many delicious pest treats are hiding! Seal all food items in airtight containers. Wiping counters, tables and other kitchen surfaces regularly is a good idea and using a vinegar or lemon cleaning solution will help ward off pests. Cleaning your yard is important too! Keep debris to a minimum and if you have a firewood stack, make sure it’s at least 20 feet from your door. Elevating that firewood is also a good idea because pests will love to winter amongst firewood, leaf piles, old newspaper and pretty much any clutter that they can hide under!
- Fix It! Replace all torn or worn weather stripping, window coverings and screens and look for any holes or wear in seals around doors and windows. Check your home’s foundation for holes as well and fill those with steel wool to keep out rodents and insects alike. Install coverings over your chimney or other entry points, like dryer vents. Keep an eye on wiring for gnawing or any other pest activity and seal if possible.
- Prevent it by being diligent. Be sure to inspect any packages you receive for any presence of pests and if you are still travelling, make sure you aren’t bringing anything back with you in your luggage. Also keep in mind that an inspection is much cheaper than an extermination, so part of your prevention method should include frequent inspections with experts! Scheduling frequent inspections will not only give you peace of mind, but we’ll be able to identify a possible infestation much sooner and stop it before it becomes an invasion.
