Pest Control for Rats: Preventive Measures and Removal

A rat eating fresh fruits with pesticides promotes pest control for rats.

Rats are destructive! They cause losses to infield and stored crops, transmit diseases, cause electrical fires, and destroy property. In 1950, Alberta created a Rat Control Program. Since then, rats have not been allowed to establish in the province. Small infestations periodically occur, but the rats are isolated and eradicated quickly. The Alberta government pays pest control inspectors for each municipality along its eastern border. Municipalities establish protocols for pest control for rats to prevent infestations. Reported sightings are verified, control measures established, and the source of the infestation is determined. Individual home and property owners must also assist.

How to Prevent Rat Infestations

The following are suggestions for rat pest control

  • Check your vehicle (particularly the undercarriage) after trips out of the province.
  • Remove food sources such as empty food containers, garbage, and spilled grain/animal food from your basement and yard.
  • Remove debris such as old newspapers, cardboard, bags, and bottles.
  • Store items appropriately, off the ground and away from walls.
  • Use plastic or metal garbage cans with tight-fitting lids.
  • Keep foundations clear by removing grass, shrubs, bushes, and mulch around structures.
  • Avoid dense planting.
  • Keep gardens/flower beds free of weeds.
  • Avoid leaving food out for cats, squirrels, or birds.
  • Remove possible shelters such as planks, bales, and old tires. Keep your property tidy and clean.
  • Keep the ground bare (six inches) around buildings.
  • Rat-proof buildings: Protect windows, doorways, and utility connections on sheds, barns, granaries, warehouses, and homes. Seal all holes and cracks in foundations, floors, and walls.
