Over the past few months, we’ve given plenty of attention to mosquitoes, ants, and other summertime bugs that manage to squeeze their way into our homes and lives. But with daytime temperatures mellowing and nights seeing the mercury drop on thermometers, it’s time to prepare for fall bugs that begin inching closer to windows, doors, and garages — each hoping to be first in line for winter shelter. Spiders are at the top of the list when it comes to creepy crawlies scouting for a refuge from cooler fall temperatures, so being vigilant! Removing the first signs of spider activity is crucial to keeping your home and garage spider-free.
Are Spiders Bugs or Insects?
Before we get too engrossed in pointing-out ways to prevent a spider infestation, we have to give them the credit they’re due by pointing out the fact that spiders aren’t bugs or insects! They are considered arachnids – just like ticks, mites, and scorpions. Insects have a distinctive three-segmented body, only six legs, antennae, and may have wings. Arachnids do not have any of these features. The word bug is used quite loosely as ‘true bugs’ refer to bed bugs, aphids, stink bugs, scales, and water-striders, but we feel that any creepy crawly that’s “bugging” you can be referred to as a bug!
Keeping Spiders Away From Your Home
There’s nothing quite like putting your foot into a winter boot, only to have some spider scamper up your leg. That’s how sneaky spiders can be; they hide out in tucked-away camping equipment and soon to be used ski gear. They’re prepared to crawl over anyone or anything to find the perfect hiding spot. So how can you prevent a spider infestation in your Calgary home and garage? Well, the good news is that the majority of spiders you encounter in Calgary are annoying, but harmless. And the most effective method for keeping them away from your castle is to remove all cobwebs and other spidery signs as soon as they form. Sweeping debris from patios and decks will eliminate hiding spots for webs and keep spiders scurrying on by. Dusting around window and door frames, along with cleaning out light fixtures is a fast and efficient method for preventing unwanted spiders.
